The renowned Nigerian sports administrator, Akin Akinbobola, has attributed the recent relegation of Sunshine Stars Football Club to what he described as the failure of the state to put round pegs in round holes.

Speaking to journalists in Akure, Akinbobola expressed deep concern over the direction of football development in Ondo State, noting that the wrong appointment of sports administrators without technical expertise or passion for the game has practically sunk the club into the ocean of relegation. 

“It’s not just about occupying positions; it’s about competence, vision, and understanding of the terrain. When you keep handing key roles to individuals without the right background, this is the result,” he said.

Sunshine Stars, once a powerhouse in Nigerian football, now faces an uncertain future following its drop from the Nigeria Premier Football League. Akinbobola urged the state government to reassess its sports governance strategy and bring in professionals with proven track records to restore the club's lost glory.

“This is a wake-up call. Ondo State people considered sports as their heritage and unifying force, and we can't afford to continue playing politics with it,” he added.

His views echo the frustration of many fans who have watched the club’s steady decline, hoping that reforms will come before it’s too late.
